In November we are changing the clinical system we use to SystmOne. This change means certain things will change. From the app you use to order prescriptions to how your information is shared. There may be some disruption to our normal service
Why the change? Many other practices use this and it is the system used by local hospitals and other NHS services. There are many benefits of this new system including more efficient record sharing so we can see hospital letters and prescriptions sooner.

  • If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the link below

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/travel-vaccinations/

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

    Travel Health Questionnaire

To help us offer the appropriate advice, please fill out the attached form before coming to see the nurse. She will check the form in advance and contact you with details of which vaccinations you will require and how much they will cost. You can email the form in advance or print it and hand in to reception. Please contact the surgery after  a week if you have not received a phone call from us.

    • Insurance claim forms
    • Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
    • Private sick notes

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.

Dr Tones is fully qualified and registered to undertake  OIL and GAS UK Medical Examinations (previously known as UKOOA). Drug screening is also available through our local hospital laboratory. • Flu vaccination is important because, while flu is unpleasant for most people, it can be dangerous and even life threatening for some people, particularly those with certain health conditions.

The best time to have your flu vaccine is in the autumn or early winter before flu starts spreading. But you can get your vaccine later.

Who should consider having a flu vaccination?

    • Everyone aged 65 years or over
    • or living in a residential or nursing home
    • the main carer of an older or disabled person
    • a household contact of an immunocompromised person
    • health or social care workers
    • pregnant

Or if you have any of these medical conditions

    • heart problems
    • a chest complaint including bronchitis, COPD or emphysema
    • kidney disease
    • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment)
    • liver disease
    • a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
    • diabetes
    • a neurological condition, for example multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy
    • a problem with your spleen, for example sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed.

    Children's flu vaccine

The children's nasal spray flu vaccine is safe and effective. It's offered every year to children to help protect them against flu.

The nasal spray flu vaccine is free on the NHS for:

    1. children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August . The practice will contact parents to book an appointment at the surgery
    2. all primary school children (Reception to Year 6) given at school.
    3. Children aged 2 to 17 years with long-term health conditions
If your child is aged between 6 months and 2 years and has a long-term health condition that makes them at higher risk from flu, they'll be offered a flu vaccine injection instead of the nasal spray. This is because the nasal spray is not licensed for children under 2 years old. The nasal spray vaccine offers the best protection for children aged 2 to 17 years. They'll be offered a flu vaccine injection if the nasal spray vaccine is not suitable for them. Injected flu vaccines are also safe and effective.
